The Hellenic Club Carnivale Performers / Saturday 17th February 2007
Presented by The Hellenic Club of Canberra
Sonora Galaxia
One of Australia’s premier Latin ensembles, Sonora Galaxia first formed in 1987. Having
rejuvenated their original line-up over the years with fresh young talent, the current band
remains a potent and pivotal force in the exciting Aussie/Latin scene – churning out hot
Salsa and Merengue tunes, which feature super-tight brass arrangements, explosive Latin
percussion and impassioned front line vocalists. The group’s Musical Director is
singer/brassman Christian Guerrero. Born and raised in Sydney by his Chilean parents, who
migrated to Australia in 1971, he is one of Australia’s most sought after Latin entertainers.
Sonora Galaxia is guaranteed to ignite this year’s Carnivale!
Los Chanelas
Chanela is gypsy slang for ‘celebration’, an appropriate description of this exciting group’s
music – a combination of flamenco, Spanish rumba and Salsa rhythms. The group originally
formed in Buenos Aires by Argentinean guitarist Miguel Ovejero. Miguel’s arrival in Australia
in 1998 saw him put together an eclectic and culturally diverse group of professional
musicians to create the current Los Chanelas line-up. The band’s sound has evolved to
capture the spontaneity and passion of the Spanish and Latin groove, with a contemporary
Australian feel.
King Tide
As Australia’s most outrageous live reggae/ska band, King Tide is something of a Sydney All-
Star band, featuring members from DIG, Bellydance, The Whitlams, Floyd Vincent and The
Child Brides. The group came together in early 2004, when vocalist Tony Hughes – one of
this country’s few great reggae singers – reformed his popular 90s party band, Bellydance
for a month of reggae-flavoured gigs. He invited the old crew, along with a few extra guests
and King Tide was born. King Tide’s 2005 album To Our Dearly Deported has enjoyed
critical praise. Get ready to party!
Brazilian Fantasy
Brazil is world famous for its spectacular Carnivale, the irresistible rhythm of the drums and
glorious costumes of sequins and feathers. The Sydney-based Brazilian Fantasy show
brings a taste of Carnival fever, a feast for the eyes and ears and an enticement to get
involved. Having performed at many high-profi le events, such as the Sydney Olympics the
group has also appeared in Japan, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea, the Philippines, New
Caledonia and Mexico.
